Try This, Instead of That

I picked  up the latest issue of Women’s Health (I love this magazine), and inside every page was information I found useful! Anyhow, I enjoyed the tips from sunscreen to food options. This issue was fun, summerry, and informational! Besides, my girl Jillian Michaels is on the cover! Here are some of favorite tips from this issue!

Keep Wrinkles at Bay!

SunScreen: If you’re like me, you’re just now using sunscreen (and you don’t like it). I love the sun and I love tanning. What I don’t love are wrinkles and cancer, so in my older age (I’m 23 now, ha), I’ve come to realize how important sun protection is. Here are some tips & facts!

“SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked to deeperskin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk ofskin cancer.”

1.) More is better! Most people don’t put an adequate amount of sunscreen on their face, this is where a higher SPF can be useful. USE MORE! Just bc it’s in your makeup doesn’t mean you applied enough.

2.) If it burns your skin, then choose sunscreen that’s more zinc-based. Stay away from octinoxate, PABA, and oxybenzone. Try Banana Boat’s Natural Reflect Lotion

3.) One reason I disliked sunscreen was because it would run into my eyes and burn! Here’s a tip for that: try using a waxy sunscreen stick. Apply, rub into skin, and go! Or you can apply your normal sunscreen, then dab the waxy stick around areas that you don’t want to sweat (like around your eyes, eyebrows, and mouth). Try Burt’s Bees Baby Bee SPF or Banana Boats sunscreen stick!

4.) If you find it makes your skin act up, then go for a sunscreen with less ingredients. Find some with zinc and titanium. Those mineral blockers help reduce redness. Gel formulas will help alleviate your skin and offer some coolness! WH suggests MD Solar Sciences SPF 30 + Mineral Screen Gel.

My favorite brands: SunScreen Sport, Banana Boat, and Coppertone.

Beat the Bloat!

De-Bloating Your Diet: When I hit the beach, the last thing I want is to feel like a balloon! So, try these tips to prevent unneeded bloating! You’re a sun goddess, don’t let bloating tell you no!

1.) Avoid sodium. No brainer there. Sodium causes swelling and pressure. I love diet dr.pepper (I know, horrible choice with sodium & aspartame), but one sip and I can feel the swelling!

2.)More fiber. Fiber helps regulate your digestion and can prevent constipation, which will bloat your tummy! I live by this rule. Grape Nuts cereal helps a lot for me (TMI).

3.) Avoid Gassy Foods like: legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, peppers, and citrus fruits.

Here’s Jillian’s Tips for De-Bloating Your Diet

My New Love

I’ve been pretty much enamoured with all things made naturally, from mother  nature’s hands for a while now. It’s only natural. When did the world become obsessed with procesed, man made crap? That’s right in the 1970’s when food science was created. Anyway, here are some of my favorite, all natural products!

All Natural Soaps

My Favorite:BEAUCOUP – Lavender, Honey, Oatmeal, Cocoa Butter, Goats Milk, Eucalyptus

Imagine smelling this delicious!
PRALINES & CREAM – Cold Process Cocoa Butter and Milk Soap – Handmade New Orleans

ABSINTHE -Anise, Peppermint, & Lemon Balm Essential Oils

The Sweet Olive Soap Works, this little gem is walking distance from where I live in New Orleans. When I walked past the store (when I was first discovering my new city) I swear I was like all bug-eyed. It was heaven. All natural soap is beautiful, smell fabulous, and leaves your skin feeling so amazing. Try it. You can order here:

My favorite Out of Africa Soap

My other favorite brand is Out of Africa. That brand gives proceeds to school children in African villages!

What do you think of all natural products??

Little, All Over Body Tips!

Use it to: Slough dry skin off heels, knees, and elbows
Why it works: The fruit acid loosens dead skin cells.
How-to: Cut a fresh orange in half and squeeze the juice of one half into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/4 cup olive oil and then blend into a moisture-rich scrub. Next, rub the exposed side of the other half of the orange over knees, elbows, heels, and any other dry spots. Last, rub in the sugar mixture to slough off dead skin. Rinse with warm water and pat skin dry.

Use it to exfoliate hands and feet
Why it works: Rich in oil, walnuts make for extra-gentle sloughing.
How-to: Perillo likes to blend 1/4 cup shelled walnuts, 1/2 cup olive oil (for extra emollients), and a tablespoon of honey (to seal moisture into your skin) in a food processor set on a slow speed, creating a fine-particle scrub. Standing in the shower (if you’re scrubbing your feet) or over a sink (if it’s for your hands), work the mixture thoroughly over your skin for a couple of minutes. Rinse with warm water
Use it to soothe and soften dry, sensitive skin
Why it works: The lactic acid in milk serves as a gentle skin exfoliant, while its natural fat content acts as a body moisturizer.
How-to: Add 1 gallon of whole milk to a tubful of warm water and soak. It’s a great alternative to sugar and salt scrubs, says Perillo, which may be too abrasive for people who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, or sensitive skin. If you prefer a fragranced bath, add 10 to 20 drops of an essential oil such as lavender.

Use it to add strength to damaged, weakened hair
Why it works: Eggs’ high protein content helps improve hair’s resilience and luster.
How-to: Philip B. suggests whisking together 1 egg, 2 tablespoons coconut oil (“rich in moisturizing fats,” he says), and 2 tablespoons sesame oil. Apply the mixture to dry hair and wrap a hot, moist towel around your head. Relax for 5 to 10 minutes. Without wetting hair first, work in a handful of shampoo, and then rinse and condition your hair.

Sour Cream
Apply sour cream and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then wash it off. It’s full of Alpha Hydroxy Acid that helps slough off dead skin cells. It also bleaches out freckles and brown spots over time.

Burt’s Bees

If you’re looking for quality care products that are made from all natural ingredients, and manufactured by a company that’s Green and Enviromental friendly, then my friends you need to meet Burt’s Bees. I am a huge fan of their hair care products and facial products. Actually, I just about use every body care they market!

Here’s some fantastic facts about Burt’s Bees (before I give you the run down of my favorite products):

“At Burt’s Bees, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of natural. We believe truly natural personal care and natural skin care products are the most effective products out there for you, the environment and The Greater Good. Discover the beauty of well-being.”

All of their products are

  • Paraben Free
  • Sulfate Free (SLS-free)
  • Petrochemical Free
  • Phthalate Free

Since 2008, Burt’s Bees has become a place of Zero Landfills as they say on their official site:

“Sending zero waste to landfill seemed impossible three years ago when we were just recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. But, we’ve come along way in reducing our waste and finding another life for just about everything. In every corner of our office and plant, you’ll find a five or six-bin waste-sorting station.

Our favorite bin is the compost bin and it’s where we put the most. In fact, 300 tons of material has been composted rather than sent to landfill since March of 2008. We love it because it becomes rich soil that helps gardens grow. If we can’t compost or recycle something, it goes to a waste-to-energy facility, where it’s used instead of coal to run cement kilns. Then the ash is used to make cinder blocks. We think materials should have an extended life rather than sit in the ground or under the ocean.”

These products are hands down the best out there. Here’s some of my favorite items!

These products are Burt’s Bees: Shampoo & Conditioner, and Shea & Grape Fruit 2 minute Deep Conditioner. I love this combination! The deep conditioner is heaven to your hair! I went jet skiing and intertubing out on the Louisiana Bayou this past week, and my naturally curly hair was a tangled mess! After I applied the deep conditioner and let it soak for 2 minutes, I could literally comb my hair with my fingers.

Their Natural Acne Solutions is my favorite. I use that and proactive. I switch every other day. Their face cleansers leave your face with a fresh, natural feel and smell! The lip balms and lip glosses are great! They’re smooth, not sticky, and refreshing!

Find out for yourself just how great this company is! Their products are my favorite and their enviromentally friendly and aware! They get 2 thumbs up in my book!

Coffee Cellulite Treatment!

This treatment doesn’t get rid of cellulite, it reduces the appearance! This is the technique some celebrities use also! The idea is the caffeine acts as a diuretic and it’s dehyradting areas between the fat cells. This reduces the appearance of cellulite; so if you have a big event or a big photo shoot, or whatever this is your quick fix!

What you need:

Coffee grinds (preferably still warm)

Olive Oil or Corn Oil (any oil will do)

Saran Wrap

Mix the coffee grinds with oil olive, corn, or any oil. You want a cakey mixture.

Next, pack the mixture over the trouble area and wrap it with Saran Wrap. This will cause your skin to absorb some of that caffeine and allow the grinds to do the dehydrating.

Keep the mixture packed for 15-30 mins.

Remember, this is only a quick fix; it only reduces the appearance of cellulite for about 24 hours.

Avocado Hair Conditioner

Want to add some luster and shine to your do? Then try adding a little avocado conditoner! Avocados are not only great for your liver, but they’r also great for your hair!

Going GREEN?!?!

 Here’s what you’ll need:

 *1 avocado

 *100% Aloe vera

 *mayonnaise (optional)

 *1 glass bowl

 *1 fork

 *shower cap

What to Do:

*Peel and remove the pit from the avocado

*With a fork, mash the avocado

*Add the mayonnaise (not alot, just enough to thinly coat your hair), aloe vera, and shampoo in the glass bowl.

   *Now,  the mixture is finished.

*I like to shampoo my hair normally using warm water; rinse again with warm water.

*Apply mixture evenly throughout your hair, uisng shower cap to secure your coated hair from the water.

*Now for the relaxing part, allow the steamy shower to let the heat & steam do its magic with the mayo and avocado!

    *Rinse and enjoy!

Additional Tips!

Skip the hair dyer! Let your hair down and free.

Mix the avocado with mayo and use as face mask!

Nature’s Oatmeal & Honey Facial Scrub!

Here’s a great, cheap, and tasty recipe for an all natural facial scrub. It’s soothing and peaceful for your pores! Let’s bring that glow on!

What You’ll Need:

*2 teaspoons of Honey, non-bleached oats, and optional raw egg

What to Do:

*First, I’d advise crushing the oats. This will make the final mixute easily appliable.

*In a bowl, combine the 2 teaspoons of honey( I find it easier to heat the spoon first, to help with honey) with the oats and the raw egg. Stir together until it comes together in a nice, spreadable, mix.

*Now, look at your beautiful face in the mirror and start spreading!

*Allow to dry. Try 10 mins.

 * Then rinse with luke warm water. After rinsing, rinse once more with cold water.

Why the ingredients?

*Honey is a great, natural mositurizer, soother for your skin. It also contains bacteria that are helpful with acne.

*Eggs are loaded with natural protein. Eggs are helpful with both hair and skin! So, Get to Crackin!

*Unbleached oats are mainly for exfoliation.

This recipe can be altered also! Some times I use a little bit of yogurt, other time I add a bit of water or non fat milk. Either way it’s all deliciously healthy for your skin!
